A monumental effort that is definitive and a "must have".

I recently purchased (from Amazon) The Glory of Wine, by Gloria Bley Miller. In my opinion it's a splendid refernce book. The writing is lucid and unpretentious, free of the wine snob jargon that is so common. It's scope is encyclopedic. All wines, from all of the wine producing countries, are covered. The various national labelilng requirements are explained. It's well indexed. If you have a particular question, it's easy to find a discussion of the desired subject. The paper-back bindilng keeps the cost within reason. All in all, a first-class book.

Gloria Bley Miller's _The Glory of Wine_ is subtitled, "A straightforward approach to the classic wine experience." This is indisputably true, but a little bit like labeling a 5-pound of Godiva chocolates with the single word "candy." Like the purveyors of those little gold foil boxes, Miller has provided an experience of great quality and richness.

The book begins literally at the root of the subject; its first chapter is dedicated to the vines and its second to man's role in tending them. If, like me, you had never heard of the phylloxera aphid, you will be amazed at the dramatic history of the 19th century, when European winegrowing hung by a slender tendril.

Miller traces her grapes through harvest and fermentation into their bottles, where she discusses and demystifies her subject in a prose that is both lucid and systematic. Traditional and newly emergent wine-growing regions are treated fully and judiciously, and the vexing question of labeling spelled out. Yet this is no mere catalog. It is an education in the production, selection, and consumption of wine.

I particularly admire the way that Miller has dealt with the large body of specialized wine-making and wine-selling vocabulary. Assuming intelligence but not expertise in the reader, she unapologetically defines her terms as she goes. The lay terminology used is comprehensible and the explanations are thorough and succinct.

If you don't know anything about wine, but you know what you like, you will like this book. If you like wine, and always wanted to understand the subject better, you will love this book. If you know everything about wine - well, buy this book for your less-blessed friends, and you will no longer need to be patient with them.

I actually checked this book out of the library for Alex, but it has made its way into the nightly rotation. When Bartholemew says "Nah, nah, nah, nah, NAH!" there is always a giggle, even though he's almost asleep. I can't wait to get 'On Your Potty'.

This book, along with Virginia Miller's other two books about these bears, "Be Gentle!" and "On Your Potty!" are pitched perfectly to the toddler set. In this book, Bartholomew, the toddler bear, resists going to bed even though he is obviously tired. He seems to be waiting for the big bear to set limits, though, because once he is *in* bed, he enjoys his hugs and tickles and (eventually) settles down. Miller's storytelling style miraculously resonates with my child and yet ultimately depicts the outcome that I, as the parent, want to happen - without seeming preachy, heavy handed, or in anyway untrue to life. The artwork is adorable too. Neither one of us has gotten tired of reading this book over and over after many months.

My wife picked up this book for me because she had heard me complaining about my own cooking on the trail and the few books I've been able to find to improve those skills. This book has lots of good recipes and easy to follow instrucions on planning and prepairing nutritional foods on the trail.

Written in the style of a traveller's guide book, the authors take you on an interplanetary cruise describing each body in detail. The book runs from the largest (the Sun) to the smallest objects (comets and tiny asteroids) in the solar system. The illustrations are either photos from spacecraft that have visited the various planets and moons, or are hypothetical paintings based on what the surfaces may look like. One particularly striking painting is of the surface of Pluto, with the sun as a mere bright speck in the sky.

I'd recommend this book to anyone with a passing interest in astronomy or the planets, it's a great read and never gets obtusely technical. Ron Miller and William K. Hartmann are without a doubt the finest planetary artists around today.

An excellent book with stunning original hand-painted art. This book discusses the worlds of our solar system rather than the planets. Each body, no matter what pigeon hole or classification it has been placed into in the past, is treated as a unique world with its own landscape, sky, weather, and character. Planets, moons, asteroids, comets, etc. are organized by size rather than type, yielding some very surprising revelations.

I acquired this book many years ago and have re-read it several times since. It is one of the most respected history books concerning the Old West because it relies on contemporary newspaper and similar accounts. It turns up in the bibliography of just about every worthwhile Western history book, and deservedly so.

Some years ago, as a professor of Criminal Justice, I was asked to teach a course about the History of the Policing Profession and while scrambling for research, this was in the days before Internet etc., I discovered Great Gunfighters of the Kansas Cowtowns. I was very pleased with the content and the measureable factual accounts or as factual as they can be within this era. Actual newspaper articles and descriptions written at the time of the event are included in the book along with the exploits of lesser known lawmen/gunfighters of that era. Ben Thompson, Long Hair Jim Courtright, Dave Mather, Billy Brooks, Chris Madden, Squirrel Annie, Bear River Tom Smith are amoung lesser lights highlighted along with Wild Bill, Wyatt Earp and others. The newspaper accounts are quite factual, plus they revealed an evolution of the culture of the era. Great Gunfighters is not a novel, but is a display of the activities of several individuals who by one means or another contributed to both the allure and order of the cowtowns and other western sites.

People who have already read my reviews on other books, will think that this review is overly cliche', but I must say that William H. Miller has got to be the greatest ocean liner author and historian in the world. This is a wonderful book, with many fabulous photos, and well written linear notes. You don't have to believe me, for I'm just a 15 year old teenager, but I can truthfully say that this book is great, and will entertain people of all ages, and interests. Another William H. Miller success story!

Breathtaking rare photographs to complement the informative potted histories.

Joe, my best freind and the guy I chose to miss a day of work to walk with him and his wife Guinn every week in Golden Gate Park. More than this, he inspired Shambhala Publications and was the silent Guru to many practicioners, setting them straight, during the sprititural shopping era of the 60's and 70's. He practiced meditation in the 1930's in San Fransicos's China Town, a lone Westener, and lived a life of a Bodhisattva and Guru until his death. He did this with no thought of gain or without ever promoting himself. His favorite saying was " Give Love with no thought of return". He practiced and taught this daily. Not with words only, but through his being. The people he worked with are many and some are famous, but that is not the point, His ordinary-ness "is", and it is captured in this book.

i used to walk in golden gate park with Joe. This book captures his essence and the power of his teaching. He was a remarkable hidden homegrown saint in america. If you want to taste a bit of his teaching then read this book. It can change your life.

This is one of my favorite books about the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Very few books really delve into the fate of these brave men that risked all by signing this document. It is necessary to understand all that the signers went though in support of the Declaration...some were imprisoned, some had all their lands destroyed, and some even lost family members to stand behind the document. This book should be required reading, so that others can learn the history of these men, and in doing so learn the history of the conflict, and the steps taken to end it. To read this book is to understand what drove the signers to make the desicion they did, and what helped them stay strong in the face of such horrifying possibilities.

If we fail to appreciate the quality of our founding fathers and the sacrifices they made, we will not understand the greatness of their creation. The audio Greatness to Spare follows the roster of the signers of the Declaration of Independence colony by colony, telling of the risks they took when they supported this fledgling nation. Although some of the information is common knowledge to history buffs, there is still much to learn from this audio. The quality of the reader's voice is very good, a pleasant one to listen to. This tape is an excellent addition to a private library or to the colonial historian. And the price is right!

This is the book I used to learn beginning Greek grammar. This is an excellent program. Story makes learning Greek easy! He uses Memory Visualization i.e. goofy pictures to help you learn vocab and paradigms. It really worked well for the class I was in, and the silly pictures seemed to make Greek a little less daunting for the novice. Another nice thing about it is that you work through all of the verb paradigms and get down to words occuring 25 times. Now, I am teaching and tutoring Greek students using this book, and I'm finding it just as easy to teach from as it was to learn from. Truly an inventive and masterful system.

This is it. The best Biblical Greek text out there. (Trust me, I've read them all). Story uses word pictures to aid in memorization and recall. Along with the flash cards, this is the best tool for learning New Testament Greek.
